About Gangotri Dham

Located at an altitude of 3,100 meters, the Gangotri Temple was originally built by Amar Singh Thapa, a Gorkha commander, and later renovated by the Maharaja of Jaipur. Surrounded by majestic glaciers and towering peaks, it is a place of deep spiritual significance.

The Bhagirath Shila, a sacred stone near the temple, marks the spot where King Bhagirath meditated. Close to Gangotri, Gaumukh Glacier, the actual source of the Ganges, attracts devotees and trekkers alike.

Significance of Shree Gangotri Dham

Shree Gangotri Dham is one of the holiest pilgrimage sites in India and a vital part of the Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand. It is the origin of the sacred River Ganga, believed to have descended from heaven to purify humanity. According to Hindu mythology, King Bhagirath’s penance brought Goddess Ganga to Earth, and Lord Shiva contained her powerful flow in his locks at this very place. The Gangotri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Ganga, stands amidst the breathtaking Garhwal Himalayas, offering an unparalleled spiritual experience.
